The Government has published its response to the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee’s report, in which it was criticised for not doing enough to support the take-up of ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs). The Government said it was looking ahead to the overall Governmental Emissions Reduction Plan, which would make clear the overall targets under which individual departments would need to publish their own plans on how this will be met. Another criticism – that the Department for Transport hasn’t provided any detail on how it will achieve its ambition of “all new cars and vans to be zero emission by 2040” – was met with a comment that interim projects will be updated shortly. While no specific date was given for when these would be available, the government has emphasised the importance of incentivising ULEVs through the tax regime, particularly through vehicle excise duty and Company Car Tax.
